I sponsor a child in Zimbabwe. Her name is Gertrude, she is 14 and I think she is beautiful. I mentioned in my last post how excited I am to get to meet her in October. I want to bring her something small that she can keep and remember that I am thinking of her back in the states. Since she is older, I am sure most of her days are filled with helping out with the younger children. A far cry from the expectations of a 14 yr old here.

My friend Blanca is a (very talented) photographer and she went to Musha Wevena a couple of years ago. She recently found out I sponsor Gertrude and sent me this captivating picture of her holding one of the small babies in the orphanage.

I sponsor her for $35 a month so she can get basic needs met. There are a little over a hundred kids at the orphanage and if any friends or family would like to sign up to sponsor a child, I would love to bring them a note, take a picture and tell them about you when I am there in October. First of all, I can’t believe I am blogging. ha. But some exciting things are happening and I want to share my stories.

To start…I have been working with an organization called H.E.L.P for the past year. Help End Local Poverty (HELP) is a global tribe dedicated to ending extreme poverty by rescuing orphans, restoring their hope and renewing their communities. I have helped with a few garage sales and a Christmas party to raise money for an orphanage called Musha Wevena in Zimbabwe that HELP supports. My heart has been touched for them and the more I learn, the more I am aware that God is leading me to go and continue this partnership. So me, along with a 5 others, are taking a trip to South Africa and Zimbabwe in October. The trip is not a mission trip…but more of a vision trip. We will be staying with local families in Zimbabwe that live near the orphange and just spending time with them learning how we can continue to help the orphagne long-term. We will also be meeting up with some folks in South Africa that can be potential partners.

I didn’t know much about Zimbabwe before I started working with HELP. Things are bad. Politically, there is corruption and the value of their currency is obselete. The Pastor that runs the orphanage (pastor John) lives on complete faith on how he will feed these kiddos. There is not much commerce in Zim, food and supplies are usually brought in from South Africa.

I am so excited to go. And I am so excited to share the journey.

So here we go! I am excited to document and share my stories about orphan care. It so hard to keep in touch with everyone and share life as much as I would like to, this seems like the best way. And bear with me, as I am new to the blogging world
